x0ne OS / Handbook / Run x0ne OS
Run the container image
Works today (measured 2026-10-09). Built locally as localhost/x0ne-os:base. The public image is next on the roadmap.
x0ne-os:base is debian:trixie-slim plus the x0ne keyring and x0ne-base. For CI pipelines and test labs.
Prerequisites
- podman (rootless is fine) or docker.
Steps, today
Build it from source, then run it.
build and run
$ make oci $ podman run --rm -it localhost/x0ne-os:base
Steps, once published
The public image arrives in Next. See the roadmap.
Expected output
inside the container
$ grep -E '^(NAME|ID|ID_LIKE)=' /etc/os-release NAME="x0ne OS" ID=x0ne ID_LIKE=debian
How to verify
Measured on 2026-10-12 against the pinned debian:trixie-slim:
- Image size: 3.9 MB more than Debian slim.
sudo, a dependency ofx0ne-basefor the first boot account, is most of it. - Start time: median 229 ms, against 239 ms for Debian slim.
- Root is locked, no usable password, no SSH server, no private key.
The x0ne apt source is present but disabled (Enabled: no) until the repository is published.
Add only what the test needs
inside the container needs the published repository
$ sudo apt install --no-install-recommends x0ne-sec-netThe container runs as root by default, so sudo is not installed there. Drop it inside the container.
How to undo
remove the image
$ podman rmi localhost/x0ne-os:base
